Deck Renovation Ideas with Stacked Stone Panels

In their early stages, DIY projects can be intimidating. How much will it cost? How much time will it take? Do I have the right tools for the job? Can I really do this myself? These are all questions that can keep a DIY rookie from beginning a project, and understanding the answers to these questions is important. If a project is too expensive for your budget or too time-consuming for your busy schedule, it’s better to hold off until a more appropriate time.

Faux Stone is Engineered for DIY Projects

However, it is important to understand that DIY products like faux stone panels are specifically designed to take care of those concerns. That’s why, more than ever, we see customers with little to no carpentry skills finishing amazing projects without professional help.

Gary George, 72, from California, is a perfect example of a novice handyman using DIY-designed products to transform his property. When asked how much experience he had with these types of projects, George responded simply: “Zero.”

DIY Deck Remodel

Gary was searching for a do-it-yourself deck remodel ideas to update his backyard space. The latticework under the deck was outdated and not as durable as he would’ve liked.

After hearing about faux stone panels on a radio ad, Gary did his own research on the GenStone website. “If I was going to do it, I wanted to do it right,” he said, “so I talked to a professional there about my outdoor deck ideas. He understood what I wanted to do, and helped talk me through it.”

House Foundation Covering Panels

So Gary got to work, first covering the latticework with plywood. This plywood provided him a supportive palette that made it even easier to install the faux stone panels. Once the plywood was in place, he started installing the house foundation covering panels that were delivered directly to his home.

“I was able to install fairly quickly because of the nature of the material,” Gary said. Of course, as with nearly any DIY project, he ran into an obstacle before he completed the project.

The ground below his deck sloped away from the deck. That meant his measurements and cuts wouldn’t be consistent all the way across the project.

Overcoming Obstacles

“It was really an easy fix. The material was so easy to cut that I was able to measure from the top down and cut out a panel to make up for the extra space.” Gary finished the project far before his projected timeline and even decided to add a faux stone walkway and stone pond to complement his new back deck area.

The back deck that was once an outdated eyesore was suddenly transformed into an attractive gathering place that could increase the value of Gary’s home.

This project didn’t require a team of professionals or a crew of workers. Bringing your outdoor deck ideas to life does not always require spending a fortune. With some guidance from the GenStone support team, Gary was able to design and execute his vision at a price he could afford and a timeline he was comfortable with. Gary’s story is one we’re happy to share as we encourage customers to continue to push forward with the projects they’ve always wanted to complete.
