What Is ‘Shed Skirting', Anyway?
If you’re new to the concept of skirting, here’s a quick description:
Most utility and storage sheds are built on concrete foundations or flat, wood bases. Depending on the size and volume of the shed, it could be supported with as much as two feet of material rise. Some sheds are built on stilts that help protect the shed subfloor from pests, corrosion, and water damage.
‘Skirting’ is a term used to describe the installation of facade material that covers the shed foundation or base. Shed skirting is a lot like wainscoting, however much less material is used as only the base of the shed is treated. Most shed skirts are smaller than two feet in height.

There are plenty of great shed skirting ideas out there, from using lattice work fencing to barn wood or installing vinyl siding to cover the exposed concrete or wood foundation. While these can be fantastic design additions for some sheds, using faux stone from GenStone is affordable, easy, and longer-lasting than traditional shed skirting treatments. How to Complete a Faux Stone Shed Skirting Project
To plan out your shed skirting project, you’ll first want to determine which stacked stone style will work best with the design aesthetic of your shed.
You have two courses of action, here:
- Choose among our selection of stacked stone color themes. If you’d like to see what your shed skirt will look like with a certain color choice, just send us a picture of your shed along with the color you’d like (i.e., Stratford or Kenai), and we’ll create a digital mockup for you.
- Get custom-colored stacked faux stone panels directly from GenStone. To do this, just send us an image of the color you want, and we’ll assist you in the process of having a truly unique color-themed panel set built just for you, including corner panels, return panels, trim, and ledgers if necessary.
Once you’ve determined what color style you’d like to go with, it’s time to take some measurements. All you need to do here is take a linear foot measurement of the base of your shed, and add 5% to the total before placing your order.

Once you’ve obtained the GenStone material you want to use for your shed skirt, it’s time for installation. Depending on the surface you’ll be treating, you’ll want to use either an industrial-grade adhesive or non-corrosive deck screws to affix your faux stone panels. For concrete foundations, the adhesive method works best. For wood foundations, either adhesive or deck screws will suffice.
Keep in mind that GenStone faux stone full panels measure 11” in height with a 1” shiplap edge. This is typically tall enough to cover most shed foundations, although yours might be taller. Because our faux stone panels are made out of polyurethane material, they’re easy to cut using a basic handsaw, radial saw, or table saw. So, you never have to worry about oversizing your project, as every piece can be cut-to-size in mere seconds.
