How to Remodel Your Home Exterior with Faux Stone

Getting Started

For a successful exterior redesign project, start by measuring the length of each wall that will be covered with your new GenStone faux stone panels. This will help you determine how many panels, corner pieces, and trim you’ll want to order.

  • To arrive at the number of stacked faux stone panels you’ll need for horizontal coverage, divide the total in inches by 42.
  • To arrive at the number of stacked faux stone panels you’ll need for vertical coverage, divide the total in inches by 12.

For example, for a 96” wide, 24” tall exterior wall, you’ll need 2.28 panels in each row with a total of two columns. Because it’s a safe bet to round up with each project, you’ll want to order 6 total panels (3 horizontal x 2 vertical).

For inside or outside corner pieces, divide your vertical wall heights by 24 (it takes two 12” corner pieces shiplapped together to complete a corner using GenStone faux stone products).

Once you know the number of panels and corner pieces you’ll need, it’s time to place your order.

[Remember: Always add 5% to your order, and round up when selecting the number of panels you need. This will help when cutting and sizing your panels.]

When you’ve obtained your faux stone panels, lay them out next to the walls that they’re going to be installed onto. This will help to give you an idea of which panels are going to go where.

After this step is complete, it’s time to prepare your exterior surfaces for installation.

Exterior Surface Preparation

Because GenStone stacked faux stone panels need to be securely fixed to exterior surfaces, we recommend using non-corrosive deck screws (or similar) in addition to industrial-grade adhesive where necessary.

Flat, unpainted plywood surfaces are ideal for exterior installations. That being said, it is possible to install GenStone panels on existing vinyl or wood plank siding, as long as the surfaces are clean and structurally sound.

Once your exterior surfaces have been prepared for installation, it’s time to fire up that power drill!

Installing the Panels

Your very first panel should be installed in the most convenient corner of your first exterior wall. A return panel or a corner piece can be used for the first panel.

Work left to right making sure shiplap screws are countersinked at least 8” apart.

Here are a few other tips to keep in mind as you install your panels:

  • Remember to use a level to ensure consistent placement before driving screws.
  • To ensure a watertight fit, double-check that positive shiplap edges are always lined up with negative shiplap edges on the adjacent panel.
  • For full-wall exterior faux stone panel installations, you’ll want to cut the top panels to size according to the vertical measurement of each wall. Cutting GenStone panels is easily achieved using a basic handsaw, radial saw, or table saw.
  • Use custom-colored caulking (available from GenStone via special order) to seal face screws after installation.

Gen Stone stacked faux stone panels do not require any weatherproofing, sealing, or post-installation treatments after they’ve been secured to your exterior walls. When your faux stone exterior installation is complete, rinse the wall using water and a light, environmentally friendly cleaning detergent just to finish things off.

…and there you have it! Now, you can start enjoying the new aesthetic of your home—all thanks to GenStone!
