Finish Your Enclosed Patio with a Stacked Stone Wall

Project Timeline

We get this question a lot: “If I’m building a room addition or enclosed patio, when is the best time to install faux stone?”

The answer is last.

That’s right: a faux stone wall treatment is something that can and should be done as a ‘capstone’ project to finish an enclosed patio. The reason for this is because the installation itself is cosmetic, not structural. GenStone faux stone panels are not weight-bearing structures, and they’re easily installed directly onto the surface of drywall, wood paneling, or other surfaces (with adequate preparation).

So, if you’re in the middle of an enclosed patio project, complete the basic build-out first, and then proceed with the next steps.

Step-by-Step Instructions

To add a faux stone wall to your enclosed patio, you’ll want to follow a few basic steps to ensure a successful outcome.

Before getting started, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the different color themes available from GenStone:

  • Kenai
  • Stratford
  • Desert Sunrise
  • Iron Ore
  • Keystone
  • Coffee

Each one has character all its own! Step one is to choose the perfect faux stone color style that suits your individual flair and existing decor.

Step two is to measure the wall you’re going to be enhancing with durable, high-quality faux stone from GenStone. To do this, you’ll want to take accurate measurements of the patio wall you’re going to treat, arriving at a total square footage for the wall space that will be covered.

For measurement tips, check out our ‘How to Measure’ guide.

Once you know which GenStone color you want to go with, and once you’ve calculated the square footage of the enclosed patio wall you’d like to enhance with faux stone, it’s time to move on to step three: ordering and preparation.

Get the Faux Stone and Prepare the Area

To obtain the faux stone panels you need, you have two options available to you:

  1. You can buy GenStone products from your local hardware store (be sure to call ahead to ensure they have the inventory you need).
  2. Order direct from GenStone!

When you place your order, don’t forget to add a 5% buffer to the total order amount. This is because it’s likely you will need extra material after cutting and sizing your panels prior to installation.

Before you get started affixing the faux stone to your enclosed patio wall, set out all of the faux stone panels you plan on using, directly in front of the wall you’ll be working on. This will give you a visualization of what panels are going to be installed, and exactly where they’ll be placed onto the wall.

Also, it’s helpful to clean the surface of the wall thoroughly using the non-bleach cleaner of your choice. After doing that, it’s time to move on to step four: cutting and sizing.

Remember that GenStone faux stone panels can be easily trimmed and cut using a standard handsaw, radial saw, or band saw. The material is also easily bored and can be installed using non-corrosive deck screws or industrial adhesive.

After you’ve right-sized your GenStone, it’s time for step five: installation!

GenStone faux stone panels are engineered to interleave with each other, making for a seamless, easy installation. For tips and tricks on how to best install GenStone products, head over to our ‘How to Install’ page, and watch our instructional videos.

After you’ve completed your faux stone wall installation in your new enclosed patio, don’t forget to snap a picture of it and send it to us. We’d love to feature your project on our website!

Good luck, and have fun!
